Chris Sturgis, MPP
Chris Sturgis is a nationally recognized leader in competency-based education and school innovation. In 2009, she co-founded CompetencyWorks, helping launch the national field of competency-based education and supporting states and districts across the country in redesigning schools around research on how students learn.
Over the past decade, she has visited more than 100 schools across the United States and internationally, documenting bold efforts to rethink grading, assessment, and student progression. Her reporting and field analysis have shaped state policy conversations and informed district-level redesign initiatives nationwide.
She is co-author of Quality Principles for Competency-Based Education (2018) and was named the Aurora Institute’s Innovator of the Year in 2019.
Earlier in her career at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Chris helped catalyze the Multiple Pathways to Graduation initiative, contributing to policy and practice shifts designed to improve outcomes for students at risk of dropping out. She also led the launch of the Youth Transition Funders Group, advancing cross-sector collaboration to strengthen youth-serving systems, including education, foster care, and juvenile justice.
Chris holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University and is widely respected for her ability to bridge research, policy, and practice in the service of more equitable and effective learning systems. She is the founder of LearningEdge.
